What does RAC ticket status mean in IRCTC?

In IRCTC, RAC status stands for ‘Reservation Against Cancellation. In this, you can travel on the train and will also be given a seat to sit. A single berth is given to two RAC ticket holders. The RAC ticket holder will be given a full berth if the other passenger cancels his confirmed ticket or does not show up for the journey. Though a RAC ticket is not a confirmed one, travelers can board the train. They are also allotted a seat for the same.

If a passenger has RAC status, it implies that the passenger can enter the train, and occupy a seat. After allotment of RAC status, passengers are given waitlist status. If the passenger has a WL (waitlist) ticket, it means that they are not granted a seat on the train. Therefore, they cannot travel on the train. WL Ticket can get confirmed only went a confirmed passenger cancels their ticket.

  1. Confirmed Berth/Seats:  Like the name suggests, you have been allotted confirmed tickets
  2. RAC (Reservation against cancellation): In this particular number of seats are booked and they can be converted into berths against the cancellation of confirmed tickets. You can travel on the train and will also be given a seat to sit, which you need to share with other passengers.
  3. Waiting List – It means you do not have a confirmed ticket. These are the tickets that can be converted into a confirmed one only after confirmation and completion of RAC tickets. However, it depends on the availability of the tickets.
